Type Locality and Naming
An Khe and Da Lat basins. Holostratotype. Chu Prong area, sw Pleiku Town (E = 13°15,30"; E = 107°58’30"). The Chu Prong Fm occurs in the Chu Prong, Dak Nao, Tieu Teo, Chu A Mung, Chu Ket, Chu Klin, Pleiklang areas, Kon Turn and Gia Lai Provinces

Lithology and Thickness
Volcanics: Tuffaceous conglomerate, Dacite, Rhyolite. Chu Prong area: (1). Tuffaceous conglomerate, conglomerate, brcccia- conglomerate, gravel-stone, gritstone and tuffaceous lava. Boulders and pebbles are of old metamorphic rock, granitoid, andesite, quartz; cements are from volcanic ash of metadacite, and mctarhyolitc. 200 m thick. (2). Dacite, rhyodacite and their tuffs, thin interbeds or lenses of banded agglomerate, felsite, 200 – 250 m thick. (3). Rhyolite, felsic and their tuffs, 180-200 m thick. The total thickness of the formation in this section is about 580 – 620 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformably on the Dak Lin Fm.
Upper contact
Unconformably below the Dray Linh Fm of early Jurassic. Regionally, the next younger unit is the Mang Yang Fm volcanics of late Anisian (which contains andesite xenoliths of the Chu Prong Fm).
Regional extent
The Chu Prong Fm occurs in the Chu Prong, Dak Nao, Tieu Teo, Chu A Mung, Chu Ket, Chu Klin, Pleiklang areas, Kon Tum and Gia Lai Provinces. In the An Khe and Da Lat basins, the Chu Prong Fm is the only formation of the Upper Permian-Lower Triassic Sequence, with a supposed age of late Changhsingian
